JOUR 1 | ARRIVÉE PAR LE VALDRESEKSPRESSEN D’OSLO FROM OSLO

Enjoy the picturesque journey from Oslo to Jotunheimen. After leaving the hustle and bustle of the capital, you’ll soon find yourself on country roads winding through small towns and surrounded by lakes and fields. As you progress through the countryside, you’ll see the mountains in the distance, and before you know it, you’ll be ascending the steep roads that lead you directly into the national park. The coach features adjustable seats, free WIFI, power outlets with USB charging ports, and onboard toilets.
Lodging: Gjendesheim DNT
Gjendesheim has a long history dating back to 1878. The cabin is managed by DNT and located in the heart of the Norwegian mountains, with Besseggen as its neighbor.

DAY 2 | BESSEGGEN HIKE

After a hearty breakfast, take the Gjendeboat to Memurubu at 07:45 with arrival at 08:05.
Lake Gjende sits at an altitude of 984 meters with peaks over 2,000 meters on all sides. After a 20-minute boat excursion, you’ll arrive at Memurubu, where your hike begins
Bessegen Hike
(Memurubu – Gjendesheim): Duration: 6-9 hours, Distance: 13 km, Elevation gain: 1000m. The popular Besseggen ridge is a route of approximately 6 to 9 hours (including breaks). The Besseggen hike takes you on spectacular, steep trails, with several very narrow sections that drop straight down four hundred meters into the lake below.

Good to know
Lodging:
Stay at Gjendesheim DNT. All DNT accommodations have shared bathrooms only. Single rooms are available upon request. You’ll enjoy a delicious dinner upon arrival and a self-prepared breakfast the next morning where you can pack your lunch for the day.
Meals:
All accommodations focus on local food. For breakfast, you’ll prepare your own packed lunch. Dinner is a two to three-course meal.
Trail/Orientation:
The Besseggen hike is well-marked, and you’ll encounter many other hikers throughout the day. The trail is partly steep and narrow, offering incredible views of the surrounding natural landscape. Be aware that you must be back at Gjendesheim on time to catch the return bus to Oslo. If you don’t make it on time, there are no other buses, and you’ll have to stay an extra day at Gjendesheim.
How demanding is the Besseggen hike:
Hiking the Besseggen ridge is quite challenging, and it’s recommended for experienced hikers. The hike will take between 7 and 9 hours, and Besseggen has an elevation gain of nearly 1000m. Make sure to plan your trip well and prepare adequately. Before setting out on the hike, always check the weather forecast, choose the right footwear and clothing for the journey, and bring along everything you’ll need in terms of food and drinks.
