A Day Among Iceland’s Most Iconic Natural Wonders.
The Golden Circle is a legendary route, a perfect snapshot of the spectacular landscapes that have made Iceland famous. In just one day, explore three extraordinary natural sites that blend history, geology, and the raw power of nature.

Here, the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly drift apart, creating a dramatic landscape of rifts, crystal-clear lakes, and striking canyons. Þingvellir is also the birthplace of the world’s first parliament, established in 930.
Next, you’ll head to Geysir, the geothermal valley that gave its name to geysers around the world. While the great Geysir is now dormant, its neighbor Strokkur erupts every 5 to 10 minutes, sending a powerful jet of hot water up to 20 meters into the air.
The final stop is Gullfoss, the “Golden Waterfall,” a stunning two-tiered cascade that plunges into a rugged canyon. On sunny days, a rainbow often arches over this majestic scene, adding a magical touch to an already unforgettable view.

Good to know
Solar Eclipse.
On 12 August 2026 at 16:42, Iceland will be treated to a total sun eclipse. A total solar eclipse is one of nature’s most spectacular spectacles.
And it is rare and unique: last time a total solar eclipse was seen from Reykjavík was June 17, 1433.
Different phases during the eclipse
- First, viewers will see the Moon gradually cover the disc of the Sun. One has to use solar eclipse goggles for this phase
- When the tiniest sliver of the Sun is left, magic happens. The last rays of the Sun cause an unbelievably gorgeous phenomenon to appear: Bailey’s beads it’s called, a diamond ring effect.
- After that, the solar corona comes into view. It’s like an eye in the sky. Look close to the edge, and you might see pinkish solar prominences – giant filaments of superheated gas rising from the Sun’s surface as if the Sun is erupting.
Look at the sky, and you’ll see some planets shining brightly.
- Then, the Moon leaves the disc, and the totality is over.
During a total solar eclipse, everything changes. You see how the lighting changes, feel the weather change, and even hear nature change as animals quiet down as if the day has turned into the night while people cheer and cry simultaneously. It’s a beautiful and emotional event.
Where to be
Ensure you are within so-called path of totality (bluegreyish zone in the image). It crosses the westernmost part of Iceland.
All areas within that zone will experience a total sun eclipse. In the rest of the country there will still be visible a partial sun eclipse.
The total eclipse will be longest at the western tips of the Westfjords, the Snæfellsnes peninsula and the Reykjanes peninsula. But will be visible also in Reykjavik and all West Iceland.
Exact timing and duration
The first phase of the eclipse (moon starting to cover the sun) will start between 16:42 pm and 16:48 pm (depending on your exact location) and takes 1 hour.
The total eclipse will start between 17:42 and 17:48 depending on your location. The duration of the total eclipse will be between 1 minute – 2.18 minutes. In Reykjavik for example, the totality of the eclipse will be 1 minute 2 seconds.
Then the moon uncovers the sun, which will take another hour.
The duration of the total event will be around 2 hours.
Please note: The solar eclipse is a natural phenomena, which is best visible with clear skies. It’s great to be flexible and mobile if the weather isn’t promising for a given area, but you won’t know until shortly before the eclipse. Even with cloudy skies, a solar eclipse will still be visible, though the experience will be altered.
In areas of Totality: Even if the sky is cloudy, totality will still cause the sky to darken, although the shift from day to night might not be as dramatic as on a clear day. The temperature will still drop, and changes in wildlife behavior, will still be noticeable.
In areas of Partial Eclipse: If it’s cloudy, you might not be able to see the partial eclipse or the moon obscuring the sun. However, you’ll still be able to see the overall change in light levels, and some of the subtle changes in the environment.
