This nine-day expedition along the Teslin River takes you through landscapes rich in history and wilderness. It’s the perfect trip for any novice paddler looking to explore a less-visited region than the Yukon River.

The Teslin River flows through the traditional lands of the Teslin Tlingit First Nation, for whom it has long been an important source of hunting and fishing. The area is ideal for spotting moose, eagles, and black bears along the shores, which also offer excellent fishing spots for Arctic grayling, northern pike, and occasionally trout.

Relax at riverside campsites set in pristine nature and enjoy meals prepared over the fire with your small group of fellow travelers. Our professional guides will teach you everything you need to know to paddle safely and set up camp.

This expedition is designed to be combined with our popular journey along the most remote roads and trails of Yukon and Alaska.

DAY 1 : ARRIVAL IN WHITEHORSE

Welcome to Whitehorse! Your guide will meet you at the airport and provide transportation to your hotel. In the evening, we will have a short meeting to meet the rest of your group and review the details of the trip. (Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse)

DAY 2 : WHITEHORSE – TESLIN RIVER/YUKON

In the morning, a shuttle will be waiting for you at your hotel. We will head south along the Alaska Highway for about an hour and a half to Johnson’s Crossing. Your guide will teach you some basic paddling techniques, and then it will be time to head to the river. Our first day will be a short section to one of the many possible camping sites along the river. The river is slow and gentle here, making it a safe and comfortable place to learn. (Overnight camping in the wild)

DAY 3 TO 10 : TESLIN RIVER

Over the next week, we will paddle more than 350 km of this quiet and picturesque river. We will encounter a mix of mostly calm, meandering currents with a few more challenging sections and rapids (all class II or below), which your guide will help you navigate safely. We will camp on gravel bars and wild sites, leaving minimal impact on the land. In the evenings, you can swim in the river, fish along the shore, and enjoy campfires and good food over the open flame. Weather permitting, we may take short hikes in the surrounding hills to search for wild berries and sunsets. The Teslin River flows into the Yukon River at the abandoned Hootalinqua trading post, and in the final days of the trip, we will travel on the Yukon River, the most famous river in Yukon. History is tangible as we pass the remnants of paddle steamers, trapper cabins, mines, and trading posts, now overgrown and returned to a state that early arrivals in the territory would have recognized. (Overnight wild camping)
