An oasis of well-being and design floating in the heart of Swedish Lapland.

Located under the Northern Lights in winter and beneath the Midnight Sun during the summer months, the Arctic Bath offers a unique hotel and spa experience that invites guests to immerse themselves in the elements while leaving a minimal environmental footprint.

The Story

From enjoying a summer swim under the Midnight Sun to marveling at the Northern Lights in winter, with nature, light, and the Arctic climate as an extra spice. Sometimes cold, bordering on the comfortable, but always alluring. Here is the Arctic Bath, a unique hotel attraction on the Lule River, located downstream from the Bodträskfors bridges, alternating between frozen and floating depending on the season.

The idea of a floating sauna first came to Per-Anders Eriksson, a resident of Harads, during the opening of Treehotel in 2010. Initially, the vision was a glass cube on a raft. Bertil Harström, who designed Treehotel’s Bird’s Nest, took up the idea, and in 2013, he and Johan Kauppi designed the circular floating building of the Arctic Bath.

Located just south of the Arctic Circle, this natural thermal establishment emphasizes the importance of forests for the country’s development. The architecture seamlessly blends with the surrounding nature and is particularly influenced by the era of timber floating. For a long time, the Lule River and its tributaries served as transport routes for timber, an old tradition in the north. The construction of our circular main building, floating on the Lule River, mimics the logs wedged in the rapids, a not uncommon sight for those transporting timber.
