Very easyThe road network of the Faroe Islands is very well developed and easy to navigate.
Bridges and tunnels connect 80% of the islands.
O-Nord has designed this package so that you can discover most of what the islands have to offer.
Detailed program
DAY 1 | PARIS / FÉROÉ – ARRIVAL IN THE FAROE ISLANDS – EXPLORE THE ISLAND OF VÁGAR
Arrival in the Faroe Islands. Pick up your rental car at the airport and enjoy the rest of the day on the island of Vágar.
Drive to the village of Gásadalur, walk along the marked trail, enjoy the impressive view of Tindhólm, and don’t miss the beautiful waterfall cascading into the sea.
Spend the night on Vágar.
DAY 2 | THE ISLAND OF MYKINES – A JEWEL IN THE NORTH ATLANTIC
Mykines is the westernmost island of the Faroe Islands archipelago. It is known as a bird paradise due to environmental protection efforts. There is only one village on the island. Until the Second World War, Mykines was one of the largest municipalities in the archipelago.
Due to its isolated location, its population has declined, and fewer than 20 residents live there year-round (around a hundred in the summer, as several Faroese people have vacation homes there). Regular boats only serve Mykines from May 1st to the end of August. For the rest of the year, connections are possible by helicopter (due to territorial continuity, prices remain very affordable).
On the island, you will see charming puffins with their colorful red beaks and impressive gannets that only breed on Mykinesholm. Upon your return to Sørvágur, retrieve the car and drive back to Vágar.
Spend the night in Vágar.
DAY 3 | STREMOY ISLAND (VESTMANNA) – EYSTUROY ISLAND (GJÓGV)
The village of Vestmanna is located on the west coast of Streymoy. Fishing is the main activity in the village. Vestmanna is famous among tourists for its boat excursions to discover wild birds.
Vestmanna is also the birthplace of one of the first hydroelectric power stations in the Faroe Islands. Rainwater is collected in four large reservoirs in the surrounding mountains and transported along the steep mountain slopes.
Recently, new discoveries of Viking remains have been made, supporting the theory that Vestmanna was one of the first towns in the Faroe Islands. Even the name Vestmanna suggests that people from the west lived here. These were Irish monks who are believed to have been the first humans to settle on the islands over 1000 years ago.
Continue to the island of Eysturoy.
Spend the night in Gjógv.
DAY 4 | AROUND GJÓGV
We suggest visiting the village of Funningur. Just 20 minutes away, along Funningsfjordur, is Elduvik. Then, head back up towards Streymoy to visit the picturesque village of Tjørnavik and take a stroll on the beach. The village bears many traces of Viking traditions. Then, continue on to Haldarsvik and Langasandur.
It will be time to return to Gjógv via Saksun. Why not visit the church and the Dúvugarður museum (open from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM).
After the visit, we suggest a hike, suitable for all, to the beach where streams meet the ocean. Along the way, travelers have a breathtaking view of the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, whose peaks are snow-covered all year round.
Spend the night in Gjógv.
DAY 5 | BORDOY ISLAND
Drive through Streymoy towards Bordoy Island.
From Leirvík, take the underwater tunnel to Klaksvík. The tunnel is adorned with a luminous artwork by the renowned Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson. It’s easy to explore the other Northern Islands from Klaksvík, each with its own dramatic landscape. For example, visit Viðoy Island, which is the northernmost of the Faroe Islands. Viðoy has two villages – Viðareiði to the north and Hvannasund to the south.
Spend the night in Klaksvík.
DAY 6 | EYSTUROY ISLAND – TÓRSHAVN
Return to Tórshavn via Runavík, an important fishing port.
Take the underwater tunnel back to Tórshavn.
Located south of Streymoy, Tórshavn is home to 16,000 residents. The world’s smallest Faroese capital is a very colorful city. It’s delightful to stroll along the harbor filled with a myriad of fishing boats, then visit the historic district : it’s organized around a maze of alleys and stairs, lined with typical houses with red and black façades.
Spend the night in Tórshavn.
DAY 7 | EYSTUROY ISLAND – KIRKJUBØUR VILLAGE
Located in the municipality of Tórshavn, the village of Kirkjubøur is the historical cultural and religious center of the Faroe Islands. A beautiful two-hour hike from Tórshavn, the best way to get there is by foot. Along the way, stop at the natural amphitheater of Reynsmúlalág, where public meetings have been held since 1850. Kirkjubøur is mainly visited for the sites of Saint Magnus Cathedral (completed in the 14th century, the paintings inside are among the oldest in Scandinavia), Saint Olav’s Church (built in 1111, a monthly mass is still held there), and the royal farms of Roykstovan (11th century).
Spend the night in Tórshavn.
