Good to know

Important:

Accommodation in McCarthy/Kennicott with shared hallway bathrooms. Rooms have a sink with cold running water and either 1 double bed or 2 twin beds. The Denali National Park bus tour may last between 8 to 12 hours, and during the early or late season, the duration may be shorter depending on weather conditions. Alaska offers a wide range of accommodations, and we will always try to book the best available hotel for you.

Equipment:

The general rule for Alaska is to wear casual and comfortable clothing that can be layered. The first layer should be something thin and close to the skin (try to avoid cotton). The second layer adds warmth and allows you the option to remove it if it gets warmer (especially fleece or similar materials). The third layer should protect you from rain and wind if necessary. For day cruises in Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords National Park, for example, it is recommended to have an additional layer, including a scarf, hat, and gloves, as it can get cold on the boats. Comfortable waterproof walking shoes or hiking boots are also recommended. A backpack is a particularly useful item to bring. Other suggested personal items include a small flashlight, a hairdryer (as some hotel rooms may not have one), insect repellent, binoculars, an ample supply of prescription medications, and a camera. A duffel bag or soft luggage is the most practical for travel in Alaska, especially on small planes and boats. It is recommended to limit yourself to one piece of luggage.

Formalities and Health:

As with any trip to the United States, a passport is essential. To be eligible for the visa waiver program, your passport must be a biometric (or electronic) passport or a machine-readable passport for passports issued before October 26, 2005. The stay should not exceed 90 days, and a round-trip ticket is mandatory. You will also need to fill out the ESTA form online at least 72 hours before departure and pay the associated $14 fee. Be sure not to overlook filling out the forms handed out by flight attendants on the plane, as they are necessary for smooth departure from the country.
