Detailed program
DAY 1 | PARIS / VÁGAR
Regular flights to the Faroe Islands. Pick up your rental car at the airport. Before leaving the island of Vágar, we recommend visiting the small villages of Gásadalur and Bø. From here, you can enjoy an impressive view of Tindhólm. Leave Vágar through the undersea tunnel and drive to the bridge crossing the North Atlantic Ocean. Spend the night on Eysturoy.
DAY 2 | NORTHERN ISLANDS
We suggest a visit to the Northern Islands. From the village of Leirvík, drive through the underwater tunnel to the town of Klaksvik. The tunnel is adorned with lights by Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson. From Klaksvík, you can take a quick hike to the summit of Klakkur, where you have an excellent view of the magnificent Kunoyarnes and the town of Klaksvík. If you have time, it’s worth driving to the village of Kunoy on the island of Kunoy, where you can get an excellent view of Kalsoy Island. On your way back to your accommodation, visit the village of Fuglafjørður. The harbor is a lively place with regular local and foreign boat traffic, marked by rusty-red sculptures. Don’t forget to visit the art and craft center, Ribarhús & Piddasahandil, located in a historic building (open from 15:00 to 17:30). Spend the night on Eysturoy.
DAY 3 | SAKSUN / TÓRSHAVN
On the way to Tórshavn, you can visit the small villages of Tjørnuvík and Saksun. Tjørnuvík is surrounded by steep hills and offers fantastic views of impressive rock formations, “The Giant and the Witch.” Saksun is a picturesque village where the bay used to be a natural protected harbor, but today, the bay’s entrance is blocked by sand. During low tide, you can walk along the sand toward the ocean. Arrive at your accommodation in Tórshavn. Enjoy free time to explore Tórshavn. We recommend taking a stroll in the old town of Tórshavn, Tinganes and Reyn, with their narrow alleyways and charming houses with grass on the roofs. Relax in the cozy café, Kaffihúsið, near the harbor with colorful boats. At the end of the harbor is Østrom, where you can see and purchase contemporary Faroese art and crafts. On the main street, you can visit the charming old bookstore. For your evening dinner, we can suggest Restaurant Áarstova and Barbara, both serving local cuisine. Spend the night in Tórshavn.
DAY 4 | TÓRSHAVN
A free day, but we recommend a visit to the village of Kirkjubøur, the historical and cultural center of the Faroe Islands. The picturesque old farmhouse is home to a family that has run the farm and ecclesiastical site for 17 generations. See the unfinished Magnus Cathedral and the small medieval town church, Saint Olav. In Tórshavn, visit the art museum. The permanent collection houses a wide variety of Faroese art and shows how nature and the landscape have dominated motifs throughout the history of Faroese art. It’s not far from there to the Nordic House, which is also worth a visit. If you have time, also visit the National Museum, which houses discoveries from the ancient Vikings and the famous Kirkjubøur chairs, which were part of the furnishings of Magnus Cathedral in Kirkjubøur. Spend the night in Tórshavn.
DAY 5 | VÁGAR / PARIS
