The Kungsleden – or King’s Trail – is Sweden’s most famous hiking route and considered one of the most stunning trails in the world. The northern section stretches over 425 kilometers, from Abisko in the north to Hemavan in the south.

This 6-day tour takes you along a 120–150 km stretch between Nikkaluokta and back – one of the most scenic and beloved parts of the trail. Exploring this breathtaking mountain landscape by dog sled is a truly unforgettable experience.

Your route leads through untouched highlands, past roaming reindeer and the historic summer settlements of the Sámi people.

As night falls, the northern lights may illuminate the sky in a mesmerizing display. Enjoy the stillness, the crisp Arctic air, and the panoramic views. Let the energy of the huskies carry you through this raw and beautiful wilderness – it’s a journey you’ll never forget.

Mountain tours run from late February to mid-April.

Detailed program

Departure on Wednesday.

DAY 1 | KIRUNA

After your arrival in Kiruna, a driver will bring you to the husky camp near Jukkasjärvi. There, you’ll meet your guide and the other participants of the tour. The guide will provide you with warm winter clothing and gear for the days ahead.

In the evening, you’ll enjoy a welcome dinner in our cozy kåta. Afterward, your guide will give an overview of the upcoming tour, introduce you to the basics of dog sledding, and explain how to safely handle both the sled and the dogs. You’ll also receive important information on how to behave in Arctic conditions and on the trail.

DAY 2 | DOGSLEDDING

The day begins with a shared breakfast. Afterwards, the equipment, sleds, and dogs are loaded into the vehicles for transport to the starting point—usually Nikkaluokta.

Once there, the sleds are unloaded and the first stage of the tour begins. You’ll travel along gently rolling trails toward either Singi or Vistas, depending on the weather. If strong winds are expected, the Vistas Valley is the preferred route for the first day. The distance is around 33 km—an ideal introduction for beginners to get a feel for the sled and the strength of the dogs.

Like all cabins along the northern “Kungsleden”, the huts in Singi and Vistas are part of the STF (Swedish Tourist Association) and offer a traditional sauna as well as a small shop.

After arriving at the cabin, the dogs are secured, water is fetched, and food is prepared and served for the dogs—with help from all participants. The day ends with a shared dinner and, if you like, a relaxing visit to the sauna.

DAY 3 to 6 | DOGSLEDDING

The days begin with feeding the dogs, followed by breakfast for the participants. Once the sleds are packed, you continue on to the next stage of the tour.

Daily routines and camp tasks remain consistent throughout the journey, as the needs of the dogs—such as rest periods and feeding times—are always the top priority. However, the time spent on the sled each day can vary depending on mountain conditions.

The weather in this region can change rapidly. Trails that were passable the day before may become difficult or impassable due to fresh snowfall or weakened snow bridges. Your guide will keep you updated daily.

DAY 7 | DOGSLEDDING

On the final day, you’ll complete the tour as you return to Nikkaluokta, passing Kebnekaise before descending into the valley. Once in Nikkaluokta, the dogs and equipment are loaded into vehicles for the transfer back to the husky camp.

In the evening, everyone comes together to celebrate with a warm, communal dinner in the inviting kåta—sharing stories and memories from an unforgettable adventure.

Good to know

  • Starting in Nikkaluokta, the classic route follows the northern section of the Kungsleden trail. Over the course of the week, you’ll visit stunning spots such as Alesjaure, Sälka, Singi, and Huukijaure before returning to Nikkaluokta to complete the tour.
  • Depending on weather and trail conditions, the guide may choose alternative stages off the main route, including Unna Allakas, Hukejaure, Kaitumjaure, and Vistas. The guide makes these decisions based on the current weather, snow conditions, and the fitness levels of the participants.
  • Daily distances range from 15 to 50 kilometers, with terrain varying from gentle valley paths and rolling hills to more challenging climbs and descents. The tour starts at around 385 meters above sea level and reaches its highest point at Tjäktja Pass, at 1,150 meters.
  • This itinerary is preliminary and subject to change. The length of each day’s stage and the exact route depend on factors beyond our control, such as weather conditions, trail accessibility, and snow quality. Cabin availability is also considered when planning the route.
  • The tour has an expedition-like character and can be physically demanding, especially since you spend many hours outdoors in the cold. Dog food and any additional equipment, alongside your personal luggage, are transported on the sleds, which can weigh between 40 and 50 kilograms. Participants must be prepared to assist their dog teams on climbs or through deep snow by pushing or walking alongside the sled.
  • Another important challenge is the mountain weather. Strong winds, storms, heavy snowfall, soft trails, open water, and icy sections are common and demand high physical endurance and mental resilience from participants.
  • Group size: Maximum 6 guests.
