Today, Kangerlussuaq is the busiest airport in Greenland. The colony’s history is interesting, starting during World War II, through the Cold War, and developing into a modern international airport.
Please note that the Northern Lights may not be visible in the sky before mid-September. Therefore, you should not expect to see them on departures in late summer.

Detailed program
DAY 1 | PARIS / COPENHAGEN
Departure for Copenhagen on SAS regular flights. Free transfer to your hotel. Overnight at the Imperial Hotel or similar in Copenhagen.
DAY 2 | COPENHAGEN / KANGERLUSSAQ – WELCOME AND TOUR
Free transfer to the airport.
You’ll be traveling from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq with Air Greenland, giving you 4 and a half hours to prepare for your adventure in Greenland. As the plane approaches Greenland, the sight of nunataks and the vast icy desert indicates what awaits you.
Kangerlussuaq welcomes you with a breath of fresh coolness. Upon arrival, you’ll check in at the Kangerlussuaq Hotel. The hotel’s location is as central as possible, as it’s situated in the airport building. You just need to bring your luggage from the baggage carousel to the reception. The rooms are spacious, and you’ll either have a view of “Koekkenfjeld” (Mount Hassel) or a view of the village and its immediate surroundings. Kangerlussuaq is beautifully nestled between incredible mountains and close to the ice cap. It’s the only place in Greenland that allows easy access to areas where you can get up close to wild reindeer and musk oxen.
After check-in, there will be an information meeting at the nearby Polar Lodge. Here, you’ll get further information about the Kangerlussuaq area and its many excursion possibilities. With all the practical information sorted out, it’s now time to explore the former American airbase on a guided bus tour, giving you insight into the fascinating history and nature of the region.
DAY 3 | EXPLORE KANGERLUSSUAQ AT YOUR LEISURE OR OPTIONAL ACTIVITY TO THE ICE CAP
The area around Kangerlussuaq is the only inhabited place in the interior of Greenland. The climate is continental with very stable weather conditions. Originally, this was also the main reason why the Americans chose this location for their base. If you wander around the area, there are still remnants to see from that time.
You are welcome to explore at your own pace, but we recommend an excursion to the Greenland Ice Sheet Point 660, which offers a unique opportunity to stand above ice several feet thick and very ancient!
Excursion to the Greenland Ice Sheet, Point 660 (optional)
The Greenland Ice Sheet is the second-largest ice sheet in the world, covering 80% of Greenland, and has always attracted expeditions and researchers. And with good reason; it’s a truly unique experience to gaze upon the vast ice field and feel the forces of nature. Along the way, we pass by the spectacular Russell Glacier, another breathtaking sight with its vertical ice wall reaching up to 60 meters.
DAY 4 | EXPLORE KANGERLUSSUAQ AT YOUR LEISURE OR OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES
Another day with plenty of opportunities. We recommend a visit to the tundra and wildlife.
Tundra Safari near Kangerlussuaq
Kangerlussuaq boasts incredibly beautiful nature and is home to the massive musk oxen. We traverse the stunning tundra landscape in our 4×4 truck, and the guide will talk to us about the diverse wildlife in this area. Perhaps we’ll be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of musk oxen and learn more about these woolly creatures.
Musk oxen roam freely in the Kangerlussuaq region. It’s impossible to predict if we’ll be able to get close to the musk oxen or simply admire them from afar. The guide always brings binoculars, so there’s a very good chance of seeing these amazing animals and other wildlife in the area. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to explore the stunning nature and wildlife around Kangerlussuaq.
Northern Lights Hunt (optional)
Kangerlussuaq is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in Greenland due to its highly stable climate. We venture away from the base into the night and await the breathtaking sight of nature’s light show. On clear evenings, we often witness some of the most beautiful Northern Lights displays in Kangerlussuaq. Seeing the curtain of light floating in various shades of green is an unforgettable sight.
DAY 5 | EXPLORE KANGERLUSSUAQ AT YOUR LEISURE OR OPTIONAL ACTIVITY TO RUSSELL GLACIER
Over the years, many travelers have had beautiful experiences at Russell Glacier.
Russell Glacier Excursion (optional)
During our visit to Russell Glacier, you will discover the spectacular glacier, which is an impressive sight with its vertical ice wall rising up to 40 meters. You may also have the chance to spot musk oxen, reindeer, or even a hare roaming in the hills.
DAY 6 | KANGERLUSSUAQ / COPENHAGEN
Your Greenland adventure is coming to an end, at least for now. The Airbus is waiting to take you back to Copenhagen with an arrival 4 hours and 30 minutes later. Transfer on your own to your hotel. Overnight at the Imperial Hotel or similar in Copenhagen.
DAY 7 | COPENHAGEN / PARIS
Breakfast. Transfer on your own to the airport. Departure to Paris on SAS regular flights.
End of our services.
HOTEL KANGERLUSSUAQ
The Kangerlussuaq Hotel is located as centrally as possible, within the airport building itself, so you need to retrieve your luggage and bring it to the reception for check-in. All rooms are spacious and offer a view of the so-called Kitchen Mountain or a view of the city and its surroundings. The hotel features a highly renowned restaurant and cafeteria, which is the meeting place for all locals in the area and the 220,000 passengers who pass through Kangerlussuaq each year.
