Kakslauttanen is one of the best places in the world to witness the Northern Lights.
Detailed program
Located in Saariselkä, in northern Finland, at the heart of the Arctic Circle.
Surrounded by pristine nature, near the Urho Kekkonen National Park.
The Northern Lights in Lapland are visible from late August to mid-April, when the skies are clear and solar activity is favorable. Light pollution is therefore the main reason why the magic of nature might not appear.
Accommodation
The construction of the accommodations was guided by a deep love for Lapland’s nature, highlighting the beauty of the region and capturing the very essence of life in Lapland. Although the cabins and igloos are nestled in the heart of peaceful wilderness, restaurants and other services are all within easy walking distance. All cabins are equipped with a sauna and a fireplace.
Log cabins
Accommodating up to 10 guests, the cabins are built from Kelo pine—majestic trees that have naturally fallen and dried over time—and are designed in a traditional style that blends beautifully with the surrounding wilderness. You’ll quickly forget the absence of a widescreen TV or dishwasher and instead enjoy the peaceful luxury of a fireplace and sauna in every cabin.
Glass igloos
Admire the Northern Lights and the sparkle of the starry sky from one of the glass igloos—whether you’re sharing the moment with friends or wrapped in the arms of your loved one. The two-person igloos are equipped with a toilet and offer the option of an extra bed. A sauna and shower are available in a nearby separate building. The four-person igloos include a toilet and their own private shower. The glass igloos are available to book throughout the Northern Lights season, which begins around August 20th and lasts until the end of April.
Kelo-Glass igloss
The Kelo-Glass Igloos combine the cozy warmth of a log cabin with the breathtaking views offered by the world-famous glass igloos. Accommodating up to 6 guests, each features a private sauna, a fireplace, a kitchen, and a bedroom with a stunning glass roof. They are built from unique Kelo pine wood, found only in this region. Enjoy the enchanting beauty of the Northern Lights and the Lapland forests from the comfort of your own private hideaway.
Snow igloos
Passer Spending a night in one of the snow igloos is an unforgettable experience. Few people have the chance to sleep peacefully in a frozen igloo, completely insulated from any outside noise. Even though the outdoor temperature can drop as low as -40°C, the temperature inside the igloo remains steady between -3°C and -6°C. Everything you need for a comfortable night is provided, including high-quality sleeping bags designed for Arctic conditions.
Queen Suite
For couples on a romantic getaway, we recommend a night in a high-end suite. This spacious 60 m² chalet, built from Kelo pine, features a luxurious bathroom with a bathtub, a private sauna, and more. On the terrace, you’ll find a jacuzzi where you can unwind and relax—no matter the season.
Wedding chamber
Earth huts, or kammi in Finnish, have been used as dwellings for centuries in Finland. With their turf-covered roofs, they blend seamlessly into the landscape—as if forest trolls themselves had built them. You won’t find a more perfect love nest; the earth hut is the ideal romantic hideaway. And why even step outside? After all, you have your own private sauna and a bathtub right in your bathroom.
Traditional House
Immerse yourself in the authentic Lappish way of life with this nearly century-old home. Everyday stress will feel like a distant memory once you’re settled into the rocking chair. This charming log house can accommodate two adults—and of course, it comes with its own private sauna.
Sivikka
Sivikka, the largest chalet, can accommodate up to 10 people. It’s spacious enough for a large family or a group of colleagues.
Inside, you’ll find a large living room, three bedrooms, a kitchen, a room with a fireplace, and of course, a sauna.
Gold Digger’s Chalets
Why not stay in peace along the Golden River? Idyllic, these cabins are all equipped with a sauna. On each terrace, you’ll find a snow scooter, the traditional mode of transport during Finnish winters, allowing you to quickly reach the restaurant or other activities on the site.
Restaurants
The à la carte menu at both restaurants will satisfy your cravings with dishes featuring local Lappish cuisine as well as Asian delicacies.
Enjoy your meals either in the traditional Kelo restaurant or at the West Village Aurora restaurant, renowned for its glass igloo bar.
By booking in advance, groups will have the opportunity to dine in Santa Claus’ celebration house or in the smoke sauna restaurant.
Activities
A wide range of activities are offered in both winter and summer.
WINTER :
The polar night, or kaamos, is a magical time in Lapland. The blue twilight, miles of snow, and the extreme cold—this is winter. In January, when the sun finally rises after a long absence, the days begin to lengthen quickly. What could be more soothing than skiing on the dense snow, going on a snowmobile safari, or basking in the bright light of the winter sun?
Husky safaris
Two large husky farms are just a few steps from Kakslauttanen. In no time, you’ll learn how to steer the huskies, and before you know it, you’ll be gliding through nature, pulled by these admirable dogs. No exhaust fumes, no engine noise—you’ll be alone with the call of nature. Various safari durations are available, ranging from a thrilling 15-minute ride to a complete overnight adventure.
Snowmobile safaris
It’s the fastest and most exhilarating way to explore the Lappish nature. The snowmobile safari takes you down the hills through the snow-covered forest, offering some of the best panoramas in the region. The two-hour safari includes a coffee break, while the four-hour safari features a meal prepared and served in the wilderness around a campfire. For those who want even more, we also offer a nighttime safari.
Reindeer safaris
The reindeer sled safari is a gentle journey through nature, organized by reindeer herders. During the reindeer sled safari, you’ll have the chance to meet and converse with the Sámi people in an authentic way. Various safari durations are available, with the longer ones including an outdoor lunch.
Ice karting
Buckle up and experience an adrenaline-filled adventure. Live the ultimate ice karting experience and test your ice-driving skills like a true Finn. This 570-meter-long professional circuit offers the best driving experience, whether you’re an experienced driver or a beginner. The track is illuminated with LED lights and equipped with professional timing systems, making the driving experience even more thrilling. The unique design of the karts ensures safe driving on ice.
Horse-riding and sleigh rides
Winter horseback riding is an activity worth experiencing, even with no prior experience. Children can also give it a try. Christmas in Finland takes on a special charm during a sleigh ride through a snow-covered forest, where the only sound you’ll hear is the jingling of the bells, all while comfortably nestled under a warm blanket.
Aurora hunting
Admiring the Northern Lights illuminating the Arctic sky with their magical glow is always an impressive spectacle, but what makes the experience unforgettable is the journey and the hunt for this natural phenomenon. Imagine a nighttime adventure in the wilderness, on a sleigh pulled by a reindeer or a horse, enjoying panoramic views from the snow tank sled, speeding across the snow on a snowmobile, or gracefully descending the slopes on skis.
Ice-fishing safari on lake Inarinjärvi
Why not try ice fishing on Lake Innanjärvi with a local guide? You can also participate in the retrieval and emptying of winter nets. After a lunch prepared over a campfire, you’ll hop on a snowmobile heading towards the Pielpajärvi Church, deep in nature, followed by a visit to the Sámi People’s Museum at Siida.
Skiing and ski school
Saariselkä is often cited as one of the best destinations in the world for cross-country skiing. Its extensive network of trails spans nearly 200 kilometers, with almost 30 kilometers illuminated. From Kakslauttanen, you can put on your skis right at the entrance of your chalet. Ski lessons are suitable for all ages, as well as a ski bus service to help you make the most of the entire ski trail network. The ski season is long, extending from October to May.
Downhill skiing and snowboarding
The Saariselkä site, the northernmost ski resort in Finland, is just a 15-minute drive from Kakslauttanen. Saariselkä offers 15 slopes of varying difficulty levels, as well as a Freestyle Park.
SUMMER :
Summer in Lapland is intense, with the sun never setting from mid-May to early August. But that doesn’t mean extreme temperatures. The climate is perfect for hiking through the hills, both day and night. The summer season ends in September, when the ruska period arrives, and nature does its stunning new colors.
Gold panning
Gold mining was active for centuries in Kakslauttanen. The gold rush was so intense for some that they settled permanently in Lapland. You can try your luck at the gold panning site.
Husky hiking & Husky farm visit
Summer is also the perfect time for a husky-drawn sled ride. Instead of skis, the sleds are equipped with wheels, allowing you to enjoy the same speed and excitement of winter all year round. If you prefer hiking, take a husky along as your companion on your journey. To see how the huskies behave in groups, visit them at the husky farm.
Horse safari
The hills of Lapland are perfect for horseback riding. The vast open spaces and the silence that reigns make this ride a unique and captivating experience. Stroll through these wild landscapes on a Finnish horse, and awaken the cowboy within you. Children, meanwhile, have the chance to ride Icelandic horses.
Cruise on on Lemmenjoki river & Visit at Sámi musuem
For many, Lemmenjoki National Park is considered the most beautiful part of Lapland. Aboard a river cruise, you’ll journey toward the Sámi village of Lemmenjoki, with a stop at the Ravadas waterfall. During lunch by the campfire, your guide will share stories of gold prospectors, reindeer herding, and Sámi culture. On the return trip, you’ll visit the Sámi Museum Siida in Inari.
Day trip to Inari
During a day trip to Inari, you can visit a reindeer farm to get up close to these calm and endearing creatures. A stop at the “Siida” Museum—the Finnish Sámi National Museum—will give you insight into Sámi culture and the nature of northern Lapland. The excursion also includes a mini cruise on Lake Inari and a visit to Ukko Island, a sacred site for the Sámi people.
Enjoying the Midnight Sun
A wide range of adventures await under the Midnight Sun, also known as the Polar Day.You can admire the glowing night skies on horseback or in a horse-drawn carriage. Or, if you prefer engines to hooves, hop on a quad and ride toward the sun. For a more relaxed option, organized car trips can take you straight to the top of Kaunispää.
Aurora Hunting
The magnificent auroras often light up the skies of northern Lapland in late summer.
Organized excursions to see the Northern Lights begin at the end of August. You can chase the auroras on horseback or in a horse-drawn carriage. Of course, if you prefer a different kind of horsepower, quads are also available for the journey.
Hiking
VYou won’t find a better place for walking and hiking anywhere in Northern Europe than Kakslauttanen. From your cabin, you have direct access to Urho Kekkonen National Park, one of the largest protected natural areas in Finland. Lemmenjoki National Park is also just down the road. There’s no need to carry a lot of bottled water with you—the environment is so pure that you can drink straight from the springs in the hills.
ATV Safari
Quad safaris offer a completely different way to experience the Lappish wilderness compared to winter excursions. A wide range of distances is available for quad safari routes.
Canoeing and whitewater kayaking
Would you rather enjoy a peaceful canoe ride on a calm lake, or take a risk and head straight into the rapids with a kayak? Here, you can do both. Whitewater kayaking on the Juutua River offers a unique adrenaline rush, while unforgettable canoe or kayak trips are also organized on the tranquil Lutto River for those seeking a more relaxed experience.
Fishing trips
This is where anglers come to turn their dreams into reality—and where beginners often discover a lifelong passion for sport. Just a short drive from Kakslauttanen, you’ll find numerous crystal-clear rivers where fishermen of all ages and skill levels can try their luck. The rivers are home to a variety of fish species, including trout, grayling, and Arctic char.
Mountain biking
Dozens of kilometers of marked trails await cyclists of all levels, from beginners to seasoned riders, all around Kakslauttanen.
Mushroom and Berry picking
After the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun, mushrooms and berries are among the most prized natural treasures of Lapland. The impact of the light-filled summer nights on nature is truly remarkable. Thanks to intense sunlight over a short growing season, the region’s berries and mushrooms are both incredibly flavorful and packed with vitamins. The cloudberry is the local specialty—people come from all over the world to pick and taste it. Visitors are free to forage for these forest and peatland delights themselves.
