Equipment
The general rule for Alaska is casual, comfortable clothing that can be worn in layers. The first layer should be something thin and close to the skin (try to avoid cotton). The second layer adds warmth and allows you the option to remove if it’s warmer (especially fleece or similar). The third layer should protect you from rain and wind if necessary. For day cruises in Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords National Park, for example, an extra layer including a scarf, hat and gloves is recommended, as it can get cold on the boats. Comfortable in walking shoes or water-repellent hiking boots are also recommended. A backpack is a particularly useful item to bring. Other suggested personal items are: a small flashlight, a hair dryer (some hotel rooms do not have this), insect repellent, binoculars, sufficient amount of prescription medication, and camera. A duffel bag or soft luggage is most practical for Alaska travel, especially in small planes and boats. It is recommended to limit yourself to one piece of luggage.
Formalities and Health
As with any trip to the United States, a passport is essential. To benefit from the visa waiver program, it must be a biometric (or electronic) passport, or a simple optical reading passport for passports issued before October 26, 2005). The stay must not exceed 90 days and a return ticket is mandatory. Finally, you will need to complete the ESTA form online at least 72 hours before departure and pay the associated tax of 14 USD. Be careful not to neglect filling out the forms given by the flight attendants on the plane, they are necessary to leave the territory without incident.
